The rolled hem, the image's final line
On the Portraits Minéraux squares, the edge is rolled and hand-stitched. This is where the making becomes legible.
The rolled hem consists in rolling the edge of the fabric between the fingers, then securing it with an invisible stitch. The gesture demands constant tension: too tight, the square pulls; too loose, the hem ripples.
On the 50, 70 and 90 squares of Portraits Minéraux, this edge is made by hand. The larger, softer and wider formats of Visages Floraux receive a flat hem that leaves the drape free.
A rolled hem is not noticed from afar. That is precisely how it is recognised.
Each piece carries, in one corner, the G·J·vS signature printed into the border — the only element of the composition that does not come from the original photograph.
